We most often embark on a journey toward change or discovering a new, better way to doing something because whatever we were taught or thought we knew and had been doing is no longer working. For many, that journey is also triggered by a life event – maybe becoming a parent, having a health scare, experiencing deep discomfort, or the simple realization that you aren’t where you expected to be at this point in your life.
Taking things a bit further, I find it fascinating how often a personal journey in one area of life overflows and begins to positively affect other areas of our lives. It reminds me of the phrase “a rising tide lifts all ships,” which is generally meant to encourage community and the concept that when one of us wins, we all win. Take it inward though, and consider the rising tide to be your health journey and the rest of the boats to be other areas of life.
When you focus on and improve your health, for example, maybe you begin in the nutrition arena. Then, as time goes on and you continue to hone your habits, skills, and mindset in this area, suddenly you find yourself brave enough to tackle a workout routine, becoming interested in paying off debt, and putting extra effort into the relationships you value.

As we lean into this concept of allowing our journeys to overflow and positively affect other areas of our lives, I encourage you to approach the emotions, experiences, and off/on days with curiosity. Don’t be afraid to explore where these thoughts and feelings came from, what you may have been influenced by when you were young, and be open to solutions you’ve never heard of before.
If you, like Brittney and I, have fab personal financial goals coming up, I encourage you to download and print the free coloring page from the opt-in below. This is a fun way to display your goals, involve the whole family, and create an ongoing conversation about spending in alignment with your values.

Advocate For Yourself
Time and time again (both recent interviewees, too!), I hear about women who know deep down in their soul that something doesn’t feel right within their body, only to have doctor after doctor tell them that they are medically “fine.”
This is because the medical field in the US is based on alleviating symptoms with medicine. They know very well which medicines are for your ache or pain, dosage recommendations, and hopefully, which medicines can and cannot be taken together. This isn’t a bash on the medical field as I have several friends whom I love and deeply respect who practice medicine. However, those in the medical profession are not typically educated toward discovering the organic root of a symptom and correcting the problem from the source.
This is why it’s so important to seek your own answers, do your own research, and begin evaluating your health concerns with a source mindset. Often, the things we are consuming (or not consuming) are the root of the issue. Bloating, constant fatigue, upset stomach multiple times a week, and general restlessness are not symptoms of a “healthy” body, no matter how often you workout.
I experienced this journey too and found answers in nutrition, specific vitamin formulations, and probiotics. Brittney found veganism in combination with her fitness routine.
The most common excuses against meal prep and eating healthy are:
I don’t know what to eat or how to cook
Healthy food is expensive
Your solutions are:
Explore Brittney’s health coaching services and learn what you can/should eat and what you like.
Take a class like Grocery Budget Makeover (affiliate above) so you can learn how to buy healthy food without breaking the bank.
Commit To Learning Continuously
Embarking on any journey requires you to be open to the fact that you don’t know what you don’t know. Do your best to approach self-education with open-mindedness and realize you might discover opposing information to what you used to hold as truth.
Many of us grow up being influenced by (or taught directly) concepts, practices, and thoughts we believed to be facts. When when you’re experiencing the adverse effects of those lessons, it’s time to learn something new. There is always more information, ground-breaking studies, and exciting new recommendations being published, especially in this era of instant and constant communication.
When you commit to being a life-long learner and consistently explore the information available, you also unwittingly commit to constant growth and improvement. Here are a few things we discuss in the interview where you can get started:

Make A Difference
Have you discovered or created a solution to a personal issue you faced? I find that most entrepreneurs didn’t embark upon a journey to create a business, but instead that they decided to share a solution that had a positive impact on their own lives. This is my story with personal finances as well as Brittney’s with healthy foods.
The realization that most people are held back from becoming their healthiest selves by questions, hesitation, and lack of education around food and nutrition became the catalyst to providing pre-made, packaged, healthy meals for fellow moms and fitness enthusiasts. Brittney never wants another mom to experience the discomfort, unrest, and concern she experienced as she went from specialist to specialist in hopes of finding a solution.
We discussed the value of a strong support network, and she credits her husband, business partner, therapy, and several close friends for supporting her through this health & fitness journey and continued support in her personal finance journey toward debt freedom.
Break The Cycle
You can decide at any time to take control and break the cycle on any subject in any area of your life. We are unknowingly saddled with generational cycles of beliefs, self-worth, personal habits, lifestyles, financial behaviors, cultural preferences, and much more.
As moms, we have to power to draw the line wherever we want, whenever we want, and begin creating the life we expect and deserve for ourselves and our children. Changing our trajectory and breaking through the mindset and beliefs instilled upon us isn’t easy, but it is possible with consistency and intention toward the desired change.
This might start with listing out things you wish you knew when you were 20 and working backward to discover how you can ensure your kids know those things now. This is often best accomplished through modeling the behavior you wish you had modeled for you as a child and doing your best to communicate openly with your children about the desired changes.
